The arrival of spring reminds me of how wonderful it is to live in London during the change of seasons. Coming from a warmer climate, I always find myself a bit unprepared for the cold, dark months of winter, usually just longing for warmer days and the feeling of the sun on my face again.
My laundry habits tend to shift with the seasons. During winter, I prioritize convenience for the sake of efficiency. But in spring, summer, and autumn, I prefer to indulge in my cleaning rituals by taking a slower, more mindful approach to life and garment care.
I believe simplicity is key. While some of my friends spend hours separating clothes based on fabric type, wash cycles, and water temperature, I find that much of this is unnecessary with modern washing machines and high-quality cleaning products.
Below are our top recommendations for a proper spring laundry routine:
1. Always follow your garment’s care instructions

This is the most crucial step of all: checking the recommended care tags. Unless you like living on the edge and risking damage to your favorite pieces, it's best to follow the guidelines.
Laundry symbols can be confusing at first glance, so keeping a care symbol guide handy in your laundry room is always a great idea.
2. Temperature matters
We always recommend washing at 20°C to 40°C. It’s kinder to the environment and much gentler on your clothes. The combination of modern detergents and efficient washing machines means your clothes will come out clean and smelling fresh at lower temperatures. However, a slightly higher temperature can be useful when items are heavily soiled and need a little extra care.
3. Take advantage of the sun

We prefer to hang our clothes to air dry, especially when the sun is shining and temperatures are rising. Relying heavily on a tumble dryer can lead to frayed fabrics and heat damage over time. However, we recommend avoiding direct, prolonged sunlight exposure when air drying, as it can fade or damage sensitive fabrics like silk and suede.
4. Using Mella products
